Support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit is slowly starting to creep throughout the entire higher-end TV market. A little less than a week after the same services began rolling out to the 2019 line of LG ThinQ AI TVs, VIZIO has announced that they’ll bring Apple’s streaming and smart home platforms to their SmartCast TVs dating back to 2016. The features will be part of the SmartCast 3.0 update, which has already started rolling out now to the latest VIZIO smart TVs.
“We are thrilled to offer an even more compelling value proposition to our users with a smart TV experience that supports all three major voice assistants,” Bill Baxter, Chief Technology Officer at VIZIO, said in a statement. “This broad range of compatibility enables VIZIO SmartCast to seamlessly integrate into any household with Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa – giving users more ways to sit back and enjoy the entertainment they love.”
With the addition of AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, VIZIO SmartCast 3.0 TVs will have access to Apple’s growing streaming and smart home ecosystem. With AirPlay 2, users will be to stream 4K and Dolby Vision HDR movies and TV shows from the Apple TV app and other AirPlay-compatible video apps right to their SmartCast TVs. Additionally, a simple tap of the AirPlay button will throw their music, photos, and personal videos right up onto the big screen from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. AirPlay also features multi-room audio capabilities, which means VIZO SmartCast owners will be able to enjoy a variety of content throughout their home on their TV, HomePod, and other AirPlay 2-compatible speakers simultaneously.
Bringing HomeKit to the SmartCast platform brings another layer of control to the user’s smart home experience. With the update, users can add their SmartCast TV to the Apple Home app on their iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Customers can then control the TV right from that platform, including powering it on or off, changing the volume, switching inputs, and asking Siri to play movies, music, or TV shows with AirPlay 2 on their VIZIO TV. Additionally, as part of the Home app experience, VIZIO’s SmartCast TVs will be able to be included in scenes and automations like any other HomeKit accessory.
For Apple, that’s two major TV brands down, with at least two more scheduled to happen sometime this year.
