Getting to Know Bluesound
Technology Integrator: What exactly is Bluesound and who is behind the brand?
John Banks: Bluesound is an all-new brand of wireless, high resolution digital audio systems, designed and engineered for music lovers. Bluesound’s sole mission is to create new and innovative wireless audio products and technologies that allow for the most true-to-live performance reproduction possible.
As a next generation multi-room high resolution music streamer, we are utilizing the most advanced state-of-the-art digital technology. As part of Lenbrook International, the owners of NAD Electronics and PSB Speakers, Bluesound can tap into the expertise and accrued wisdom of these two iconic audio brands to elevate the audio performance.
TI: Is it mostly NAD and PSB technology or are there new things in Bluesound?
Banks: Each brand has its own core expertise: NAD in electronics, PSB in acoustics, and Bluesound in operating software and digital networks. In some ways, Bluesound is the intersection of all three brands.
TI: How do you compare to the market leader Sonos?
Banks: Sonos has done a great job in creating this space and have grown to the point where they now appeal to, and must focus on, the mass audience. Bluesound is a next generation product that not only streams music wirelessly to multiple rooms, but also plays high-res files. Bluesound also offers a substantially higher level of audio performance, for example, we utilize our most sophisticated DAC and amplifier technologies in Bluesound, not the least expensive possible. We believe Bluesound appeals to a customer that’s willing to invest a little more in exchange for a substantially better experience.
TI: Who do you see as the customer for Bluesound and why?
Banks: We see Bluesound as appealing to all music lovers but especially to the Digital Native. One who is comfortable with technology and appreciates great sound. Bluesound can also appeal to traditional audiophiles who yearn for the convenience of digital technology and an easy and interesting user interface but aren’t willing to sacrifice sound quality to get it.
TI: Is Bluesound DIY or is there a role for the custom retailer and professional installer?
Banks: It has been designed to be DIY for most consumers, but for many that want a whole house system, we feel they are best served by buying from a custom retailer, who will professionally install the system and make sure it is optimized. We also encourage the Bluesound customer to develop a relationship with the specialist who can also advise and install better quality networking products.
