Vendor View: Passion Breeds Invention
Not every innovation in the custom electronics industry comes from major corporations with deep pockets. VidaBox LLC, a manufacturer of digital entertainment and control solutions, was founded by two degreed engineers. Using their technical knowledge and design capabilities, the team of Steven Cheung and Sergio DeAlbuquerque, now president and vice president of VidaBox, have created innovative media center and control solutions for the custom integration market.
Their offerings include many unique features such as the “1-step” archiving technology on their new RackServer™ and their vAutomation™ integration platform. Their ability to innovate is rooted in the founders’ drive to always stay on the cutting edge.
“The VidaBox systems that our dealers and customers know and love are actually the result of years of engineering, development and fine-tuning,” says Cheung. “This whole adventure actually started in the early 2000s. I’ve always been a big fan of karaoke and wanted to digitize my entire CD+G disc collection for instant, on-demand playback, but there was nothing out there that could do the job. I ended up building my own PC-based system and it worked great, but it was difficult to use since there was no remote or GUI. Someone always had to use the keyboard and mouse. Since this was a side project, I left it alone for a few years.”
DeAlbuquerque, who had worked with Cheung before VidaBox started, adds, “My story began with me starting a family. I had a baby on the way and was looking to get something that could store my music, videos and pictures—all my discs. I’ve seen kids treat discs like Frisbees—they get spit on, sat on, thrown around; it’s just a matter of time before it ends up in the garbage can! I started looking around for solutions and bought some equipment, but it didn’t have the features I needed, was too expensive, or never work as advertised.”
