Swidget Offers a Smart Upgrade for Your Boring Power Outlets
Smart plugs are not a new concept when it comes to simple DIY smart home solutions for the consumer. But so much of that technology relies on the user plugging that product into an existing outlet, effectively monopolizing that plug for said smart product. And that’s where Swidget hopes its product can step in and tackle the problem right at the very (power) source—the outlet.
Though it’s been around via various crowdfunding campaigns for a little while, Swidget targeted CES 2019 as its official coming out party. There, the company showed off its incredibly unique and downright brilliant product, which upgrades those boring old two-plug outlets into customizable smart home solutions. The modular design gives the user access to those same two plug ports as well as an insert station, which is where the real magic happens with this product.
Without an insert, the Swidget outlet functions just like your standard wall outlet. But adding an insert is really what upgrades the experience here. At launch, Swidget will have 11 available inserts that include things like Z-Wave Control, WiFi Control, lighting, USB charging, and more. In a demo at CES, the company showed off a number of other potential future inserts, including things like scented inserts, security cameras, smart speaker access, and more. Beyond freeing up the user's outlet space, the inserts also provide the added benefit of not having bulky components hanging out of an outlet, which can create something of an eyesore.
And with the company promising to release additional inserts on a regular basis, they feel safe telling consumers that the Swidget is a “future proof” technology.
“With more than 50 percent of homes in the U.S. expected to be smart equipped by 2022, we don’t intend Swidget to be just another household accessory, but rather a device that makes smart homes simpler,” Lowell Misener, co-founder of Swidget, said in a statement. “Not only is it easy to install and use, it has the ability to adapt to changing lifestyles and evolving technologies whenever the user needs it to. Swidget provides a solution for those that want to begin their smart home journey or expand their current system without adding unnecessary clutter.”
In their demo at CES, the company showed how simple the inserts were to pop in and out of the outlet. A basic pinch mechanism is built into each insert making it easy to grasp and remove from the slot. The outlet itself requires some basic wiring experience and is designed to work with a home’s existing wiring system, but it is completely doable for the DIY smart home consumer. They could also serve as a nice add on for custom installers looking to give their clients an additional boost of “smart” within their home.
The company is currently fulfilling all of the crowdfunding pre-orders it received. All of the Swidget inserts and the Swidget outlet will become available through the company’s website and Amazon this month. The outlet will carry a suggested retail price of $39.99 while the inserts will start at $5.99 and may vary in price depending on connectivity and functionality.
