CR Talks To... Numinus: Heads Up
CustomRetailer: You started your business in 2001. What did you do before that, and what stimulated your interest in doing what you do now? Also, how did you come up with your company name?
Lisa Isaacson: “Numinus” means supernatural and mysterious, or filled with a sense of a presence or divinity. I am an electrical contractor and my husband, Chris (who is the general manager), is a mechanical engineer. He does product design. When I was wiring houses, I was doing custom fiber optic lighting. I started putting in these fiber optic starfields in the homes I was wiring. Then Chris suggested making a dome and putting the stars in it as one product.
CR: Talk about how custom retailers can get into selling StarFields and StarDomes—and about the profitability in selling such products.
Isaacson: It adds a great level of dimension to the finished product. With home theaters, StarTiles is the more dominant product; it offers acoustic treatment as well, as they are acoustic panels that mount right onto a flat ceiling. Also, a large ceiling can be installed usually within one day. It’s very easy to do. The installer just recesses an outlet behind the tiles, plugs in and daisychains.
CR: Talk about the “green” aspects of what you are selling—and how integrators can convey that aspect of your products to clients?
Isaacson: The LEDs used in the StarFields typically draw about two watts, versus a halogen illuminator, which draws 75 watts. Last year, we started developing LED products. We make LED downlight luminaires and LED strips and developed controllers—low-voltage dimmers that dim the LEDs down to less than one percent. And we have our RGB LED controllers, which can communicate with different integration systems like Control4 and Lutron HomeWorks with a simple RS-232 command.
