Covering All of the Bases
Electronic systems contractors need to work with systems that can cross easily between the world of commercial and residential integration. Troy Dunnington of Lightworks—a high-end custom lighting, audio/video and home theater design firm in San Diego, Calif., has mingled between the two for many years and has come up with some tried-and-true solutions that help him work seamlessly in both worlds.
One of his clients, Wardell Builders, builders of high-end custom properties, in Solana Beach, wanted an easy-to-use, inexpensive audio and video control distribution system. So Dunnington and Lightworks installed Sony's HomeShare HD—in this case, it was a main system and four zones of straight audio/video and a front-door camera. Said Dunnington, "When the front doorbell rings, the audio system throughout the company mutes. The clients are very happy with a streamlined, easy-to-use system that didn't break the bank."
Explained Neal Mankowitz, director, home division, Home Audio & Video of Sony, "HomeShare is very exciting for us, our installation partners and consumers. We have several hundred installers that are now using HomeShare and the R&D for the system was quite fast. This is mainly because we were able to leverage many different Sony technologies that were already developed. Sony's Digital Media Port technology allowed us to have an easy, low-cost iPod dock solution for installers. We have been utilizing this technology for several years in the retail channel. Then, of course, high-definition video distribution over Cat5e. We have already developed this for our custom installation HD video distribution switcher, the CAV-CVS12ES, also integrating with our ES receivers.
"By utilizing the advanced technologies in our receivers (two-way control via RS-232, Sirius/XM radio and IR repeater function, etc.), we could reduce the costs and development of HomeShare HD."
On the residential side of business, Dunnigton shows off another Sony custom installation product, what he calls "the backbone" of a stunning home—the Sony NHS-130C rack system that provides 7.1 channel, high-definition home theater for the living room, plus HD video distribution and multi-room music. The system comes fully integrated with Control4 technology.
