Samsung Starts Spring SUHD, UHD TV Rollout
Samsung on Thursday provided details on its rollout of its premium series of curved SUHD TVs and 4K UHD TVs that will vary in display size from 48 to 88 inches in SUHD and from 40 to 105 inches in UHD. Pricing ranges from $2,999.99 for the JS8500 series 55-inch entry-level SUHD model to $9,999.99 for the 78-inch curved JS9100 series SUHD; the flagship series, JS9500, starts in price from $6,499.99.
The SUHD curved models use cadmium-free nano-crystal technology and local dimming. The sets carry the company’s Tizen Smart TV operating system, featuring a user interface that more readily accesses streaming content, and a Quick Connect system to enable easier tethering with mobile devices for a “second-screen” experience, says the company.
Dave Das, Samsung Electronics America’s senior vice president, said the new SUHD models offered 64 times more “color expression” than the previous generation of TV, along with the widest dynamic range of any TV available.
Das cited statistics showing Samsung as the #1 TV manufacturer for the last nine years, saying that in the UHD TV category, more than half of all TVs sold are Samsung-branded. As for the overall UHD TV market, he said Samsung’s growth projections were tracking slightly higher than numbers offered by other research sources that show industrywide sales for that category reaching nine million units by 2016. “We think sales can go as high as 4.5 million industrywide in 2015, and reach almost 10 million units by 2016,” he told Dealerscope. “With any new TV technology, there is a predictable growth trend, but we see UHD outpacing first-year growth rates for many of the other technologies that have been introduced,” he said, adding that sales are being strongly driven by the increasing availability of streaming content.
To complement the new line of curved sets, Samsung has also announced a full line of matching curved soundbars – four in all, and each paired with a wireless subwoofer. The top-line model, matching the company’s 65- and 78-inch curved sets, is the HW-J8500 ($1,299.99), offering 9.1-channel 350-watt output through the sub and discrete center and side speakers.
