Samsung Pushes Onyx Cinema LED Screen to the Limits
First launched in July of 2017, Samsung’s Onyx Cinema LED screen more than delivers on its promise of bringing ultra-large screens with impressive color technology into the movie theater experience. Now, though, Samsung is pushing its own limits by taking that Onyx technology even further. The Korean tech firm announced this week the successful installation of a 14-meter (46.2-feed) wide Onyx Cinema LED screen at Capital Cinema in the Xicheng district in Beijing.
The new, larger Onyx display is 1.4-times larger than the current 10 meter (33.6 foot) wide display that is installed in a number of theaters across the globe. Additionally the larger screen provides nearly twice the amount of surface area as the original model.
Samsung held a grand opening ceremony for the screen at the theater on December 7, and there announced that the screen technology is available for movie theaters across the globe.
“Our new Onyx display reflects a momentous step for the industry, as we usher in the next generation of cinema around the globe,” Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement. “We’re excited to partner with Capital Cinema to help showcase the new industry standard for picture quality on the big screen.”
According to Samsung, the Onyx Cinema LED screen can accommodate nearly any venue configuration. The one installed at the Capital Theater combines a number of popular current-gen TV technologies like 4K resolution, HDR picture quality, and peak brightness levels of 88fL, which is nearly six times greater than standard projector technologies. The screen is also 3D-ready and DCI-certified (Digital Cinema Initiatives), meaning it can display a variety of content types.
“We’re always looking for new ways to enhance our customer experience,” said Deng Yonghong, CEO of Capital Cinema. “That’s why we are absolutely thrilled to incorporate the world’s first 14-meter Onyx Cinema LED screen into our theaters as it creates a best-in-class cinema experience that is truly unmatched, and an immersive environment unlike anything our customers have experienced before.”
Samsung has installed its Onyx Cinema LED screens in theaters throughout the world through partnerships with Los Angeles’s Pacific Theaters, and Arena Cinemas’ Sihlcity theater in Zurich, Switzerland.
