A Recap of the Biggest News Out of CES Unveiled New York
The Consumer Technology Association wrapped up its annual CES Unveiled New York event on Tuesday, and there was a ton of buzz as press and other attendees departed with under two months until the official opening of CES 2016. Let’s run through the major news items to come out of the event
CTA Rebrands. Easily the biggest announcement of the day was that the Consumer Electronics Association is no longer known as the Consumer Electronics Association. CEO Gary Shapiro announced that, to keep up with the evolutions the consumer tech space has encountered in recent years, the association decided to rebrand. Henceforth, the organization will be known as the Consumer Technology Association.
“Our mission absolutely remains to grow our industry. And the industry we represent has grown as well,” Shapiro said in an exclusive interview with Dealerscope’s Nancy Klosek on Tuesday from the CES Unveiled event. "Our name change reflects that growth and allows us to more accurately represent the entire consumer technology sector. … The name Consumer Technology Association addresses the most outdated part of our current name, replacing ‘Electronics’ with ‘Technology.’ With CTA, we’re able to update our brand name without changing our core identity.”
NBCUniversal CEO to Keynote CES 2016. Steve Burke, CEO of NBCUniversal, will serve as the C Space keynote, CTA announced on Tuesday at CES Unveiled. MediaLink’s Michael Kassan will interview Burke, getting his insights on the rapidly evolving media and marketing landscapes.
CES Innovation Awards. The CES Best of Innovation Awards Honorees for CES 2016 were announced on Tuesday as well. The program is an annual competition that honors “outstanding design and engineering advancements across 27 consumer technology product categories,” CTA explained. Each of the categories has a three-member judging tem that evaluates the products based on the criteria of engineering, design, function, features, and how the product directly compares to competitors in the market. The products that received the Best of Innovation designation will be featured in the Innovations Awards Showcase at CES Tech West during CES 2016 in January.
