Quincy Jones Debuts Headphones at J&R
New York City retailer J&R Music World’s store in the Wall Street area was the venue for the world launch of Harman’s three-model Quincy Jones Signature Line by AKG range of high-performance headphones. Jones himself signed autographs for throngs of music fans and admirers who queued up around the block for the chance to meet the legendary musician and producer.
Jones, responsible for producing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album and the “We are the World” recording, partnered with Harman for the line’s development because of his admiration for AKG headphones, which he said he has used throughout his career. The range consists of three models ranging from the $399 Q701 over-ear headphones, the $179 Q460 on-ear minis and the $99 Q350 in-ear headphones.
Chris Dragon, director of consumer and field marketing, Harman Consumer Americas, said that every aspect of the headphones – their texture, coloring, packaging, logo design and form-factor – was shaped with input from Jones himself. However, he added, nothing about the headphones was influenced more by Jones than their unique sound. “He was very much pro-active with what we did,” he said. “These headphones have the characteristic AKG voicing, with a Quincy Jones signature added to them.”
A share of the proceeds from every headphone sold is being earmarked for the Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium, a foundation dedicated to promoting music education among children.
While the J&R event was the kickoff for the headphones going on sale, a “Sessions” event in Hollywood’s Guitar Center location that Jones will participate in is scheduled for early December, said Dragon.
In addition to partnering with Harman on the AKG line, Jones has also just released a new recording, “Q: Soul Bossa Nostra,” and a book, “Q on Producing.”
