Pioneer Introduces 400GB Storage Disc, Recorders
Pioneer Electronics has developed a new optical disc that holds 400GB of data, the largest total yet introduced. According to the IDG News Service, the disc packs 16 layers, each holding 25GB of capacity, and is “similar” to established Blu-ray Disc technology.
Pioneer, however, has no plans to release the disc commercially, but rather is planning to work with manufacturers, according to IDG. Pioneer will fully introduce the technology at next week’s International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage in Hawaii.
Meanwhile, the company said Tuesday that it would begin selling Blu-ray Disc recorders, starting in Japan next spring. According to the AP, Pioneer has announced no plans to sell the technology stateside.
