Opening My Custom Retail Shop
My best friends expressed their concerns to my face, while others only told me at our grand opening. Some helped and understood what I was trying to do, as time brought progress; some just pitched in and did what I asked but still had trouble understanding what we we're trying to do. Some of your support team won't show up at all. Be prepared for that. Some of the people you expect to be right by your side won't be there until they need something installed in their homes. Others, on the other hand, may just surprise you. Either way, once you start building a new business, you'll find out who your real friends are.
Some friends were just there to help with anything—grab a broom, go get a pizza for everyone, rip down a ceiling, whatever I needed. Fortunately for me, my brother John and one of my best friends are plumbers. Without the generosity of my brother's company letting us use its heavy equipment for some of the underground work we had to do, we would have had even more problems.
I very rarely ask for help, but when I felt up against the wall, I sent out a call for help, and my true friends and family were there for us.
Just as we do with the home theaters and multi-room systems we install for our clients, I believe you need to have a vision of what your ultimate goal is, not to mention who your customers will be.
Even if you think you've thought of it all, and lined everything up properly, be prepared for the unexpected. Some of our biggest obstacles to opening the new store were ones I didn't anticipate, and they made the whole process take longer than I ever imagined.
