Video-streaming giant is ready to unveil their next biggest announcement since bringing 4K, high-dynamic video to homeowners across the nation in the form of Dolby Atmos. Currently, Netflix is rolling out the immersive sound format, revealing Bong Joon-ho's Okja as the first film to get the treatment.
A cornerstone of any professional home theater setup, surround sound hasn't really been a high priority for companies. And while Atmos is celebrating only its 5th birthday this year, ceiling-mounted speakers and 5.1 systems have been integrated into media rooms for much longer.
Expect Netflix's first rollout of Atmos to be limited, and rarely compatible. As of now, LG televisions can stream Atmos, as well as Microsoft's line of Xbox One and One S. Of corse, you need a compatible setup, though Xbox is offering a virtualized Atmos mix with binaural headphones. Netflix plans to expand on both devices and titles over the next few years, stressing the importance of high-quality content as a long-term plan.
