U.K.-based Meridian Audio has introduced the latest generation of the 808, a part of the famed 800 Reference Series, that was specifically developed to render “the very best sound from Compact Disc and network audio.” Further, the 808v6 now decodes Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) sources.
Meridian is calling the 808v6 the highest performance CD player ever manufactured by the company. On top of the MQA source decoding capabilities, the device includes a number of “ground-breaking” and “significant” improvements that will enable it to deliver studio quality reproduction via both digital and analog outputs.
At its core though, the device is a CD player. The 808v6 offers CD playback from an internal CD ROM based drive that allows for data recovery and error correction “many times better than that employed in standard CD systems,” Meridian explained. The development of the 808v6 with its continued focus on CD playback shows Meridian’s belief that the compact disc format is still a significant music source, the company said.
The full list of new features includes:
- Built-in MQA decoder – fully supports Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) encoded music playback, guaranteeing a studio master quality experience
- Upgraded S/PDIF and USB receivers – enables USB and RCA inputs to receive up to 192 kHz digital audio
- Enhanced DSP chip – offers lip-sync control, DSD playback (DoP) and MQA rendering capability for analogue outputs. The analogue outputs also feature Bass, Treble and Balance Controls
- Improved analogue output card – features an upgraded circuit with filtering that broadens the bandwidth, and maximises the potential of high-resolution music
The 808v6 is available in black as well as the complete range of Meridian Select colors for an additional $1,100 charge. The product itself, which is available now, will sell for $22,000.
