The new LG webOS 3.0 operating system— announced yesterday along with a new slate of Smart TVs that will be making their debut at CES 2016—received a boost on Wednesday. LG said that the smart TV operating system is now verified by UL, a leading global testing and certification organization, for its compatibility with Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
LG explained that, through a proprietary IoTV app, its lineup of 2016S SMART TVs will be able to deliver smart home management functions via the LG webOS 3.0 operating system, allowing the user to control LG smart appliances. And once connected, the status of the various appliances will appear on the LG SMART TV display, acting as an interface between the user and the connected devices. Through webOS 3.0, the user will be able to control specific home appliances like their refrigerator, air conditioners, and washing machines that are connected via WiFi or wires. They can, for example, adjust the lighting in a room or change the temperature setting of their air conditioner, all through the webOS 3.0 controls on their LG SMART TV.
“We have always viewed the living room TV as the central hub of the smart home and LG SMART TV with webOS 3.0 was designed with this eventual functionality in mind,” Sam Kim, senior vice president and head of TV product planning at the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company, said in a statement. “LG will continue to provide the best user experience and develop innovative IoT-capable home products beyond the expectations of consumers.”
UL verified a series of LG webOS 3.0-enabled OLED and UHD TVs. The tech will be on display at the Smart Home zone of LG’s CES booth in Las Vegas.
LG SIGNATURE Series
On top of the UL verification news, LG announced that it will unveil a new SIGNATURE premium lineup of home entertainment devices and appliances. The new high-end products will be a differentiated brand, featuring innovations that are unique to the company, LG said. The SIGNATURE lineup will initially consist of a television, refrigerator, washing machines, and air purifier, with more products being added as the brand expands.
