Five Questions With...: Jeremy Burkhardt of Origin Acoustics
What’s the Origin Acoustics elevator pitch?
Origin is the team that invented the in-wall speaker three decades ago. We represent over 100 years of combined experience in the speaker business and spent our lives as designers and manufacturers for SpeakerCraft, Sonance, Niles, JBL, Polk and others.
Today we have reinvented the category and have introduced several patented innovations that have totally raised the standard in both audio performance and installation efficiency. The ability to fit an eight-inch speaker into everyone else’s six-inch cutout and fit a 10-inch speaker into everyone else’s eight-inch cutout is just one example of this effort. With over 50 speaker models delivering this year, Origin Acoustics is the innovator and industry leader in a category that was thought to be played out. We have reinvented architectural audio again.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve heard from an integrator recently?
I was talking to a dealer that buys non-branded speakers from a website and he said, “They sound good enough…” After 10 minutes he decided to sell step-up Origin Acoustics products and reposition his service values to become more luxury experience-based.
What’s the biggest challenge facing the custom
channel in 2015?
As software/wireless systems become the standard for our installation backbone, it is compelling to sell low-cost speakers provided in these turnkey systems. In a consumer product cycle, the manufacturers have shown time and again that they will decrease the installing dealers’ margins to hit “price points.” Don’t sacrifice quality sound to just make the job easy, and always be present and focused on the bottom line.
What do you think of Dolby Atmos?
Selfishly I appreciate any technology that sells more speakers. Having one of the widest selections of in-ceiling speakers designed with Atmos and wide dispersion in mind, we are positioned to ride the wave. Dolby Atmos is one of the best-sounding home theater experiences I have ever had.
