IKEA Readies Qi-Powered Wireless-Charging Furniture
IKEA may have a major position in the furniture market, but it's never really gotten into consumer electronics. The chain made noises about producing a television in 2012, but it never surfaced.
That's about to change, with IKEA this week announcing that bedside tables, lamps and desks will be equipped with Qi-powered wireless charging. Qi is the standard established by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC.)
The announcement came at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
"Our belief is that mobile phones are vital parts to people's lives at home and their desire to stay connected, and Qi addresses an unmet need to keep devices powered," Bjorn Block, Range Manager for Lighting and Wireless Charging, at IKEA, said in a statement.
"As a member of WPC, we value the access to the leading and most advanced global standard for wireless charging."
