Glikes on Green Electronics
We recently caught up with Richard Glikes, executive director of Home Theater Specialists of America’s (HTSA) who gave us a quick and refreshingly candid interview regarding some of the major trends happening in the industry. Here are some highlights:
Dealerscope: You were just talking about the important role ‘green’ is playing in the consumer’s buying decision. Can you explain?
Glikes: Well we’re getting a lot of conversation from the consumers, our clients, about which products are more green: should I buy an LCD or a plasma; what’s the green philosophy of the company; and that seems to be a tie breaker. It’s unusual because it’s happening more and more. I heard about (the trend) three months ago and I didn’t think it was a big deal, but all of a suddenall of our dealers are getting calls and comments about ‘green.’ We’ve actually just complete a book about each of the companies we work with and what their green philosophy is.
CustomRetailer: The economy certainly doesn’t seem to be getting any better. How would you sum about the state of the economy and how it’s affecting your members compared with this time last year?
Glikes: Words like ‘putrid,’ ‘anemic,’ “desperate.’ I would say the more retail our member is versus custom the worse off they are. The ones who are more retail may be off 20 to 25 percent. The ones who are custom-only and have a good pipeline, they’re doing fine. But there’s not much growth out there, and the traffic is very slow. What we’re doing is maximizing each sale as opposed to having more smaller sales, and that’s what’s keeping us alive. The economy is in very bad shape.
CustomRetailer: For the retailers that are struggling, are there any particular strategies your deploying to help them improve business.
