Honeywell Lyric Controller First Compatible System with Apple Homekit
Honeywell's seven-inch touchscreen Lyric Controller has won the race as the first compatible with Apple HomeKit. The HomeKit has been taking the typical slow and steady approach that usually works for Apple, and it seems that adding compatibility for a company of Honeywell should start a domino effect.
When we first saw the HomeKit refresh at Apple's WWDC this year, our editors had some skepticism. It felt like the right move, with the normal barriers that keep products working "perfectly" in the Apple ecosystem, but can seriously limit growth. And to our credit, we were mostly right. If you look at how fast other competitors Amazon and Google have enabled a swarm of products to play nicely, it's starting to appear that Apple may be left in the dust.
That also makes this Honeywell announcement, a major one. For starters, Honeywell is a huge player in the CI space despite the Lyric only being a few years old. Their intersection to the HomeKit not only proves that CI focused manufactureres can integrate but also proves the Apple is willing to play ball.
In this use case, the Lyric Controller will provide access through native authentication on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, including Touch ID and Face ID on iPhone X. The subscription-based security system will contact first responders, control lighting, and monitor windows, doors, as well as gas leaks. Leveraging HomeKit, the Lyric will respond to commands from Siri as well, even when using Apple TV or an iPad as a HomeKit hub.
“Smart home technology has made consumers more reliant on their mobile devices to manage their homes,” said Scott Harkins, vice president and general manager of Connected Home, Honeywell Home, and Building Technologies. “The addition of HomeKit support to the Lyric Controller improves the connected home experience for consumers and provides new opportunities for dealers. Dealers can leverage the Apple ecosystem of HomeKit partners to expand their connected home offering and deliver a robust interface to manage the home.”
