Made in America: Technology Integrator Salutes: Made In North America Fortress Seating
Before Fortress became Fortress, it was a manufacturer of steel shelves and lockers. Founded by Nicholas Kessler in the 1930’s, Fortress went from manufacturing steel shelves to ammunition boxes during WWII. When the war ended production went back to desks and files. Then in 1959 Fortress incorporated in the state of California and has been manufacturing furniture ever since for over 5 decades.
Fortress eventually grew to be one of California’s major furniture manufacturers. During the 1960’s and 70’s Fortress collaborated with Atelier International, John Follis Design, Gio Ponti and Le Corbusier and transformed itself from a steel desk manufacturer into a manufacturer of high-end upholstered seating and steel furniture.
Fortress shipped desks, files and seating world-wide until a fire destroyed the steel plant in 1978. Luckily the facility that manufactured the upholstered seating was located several miles away and continued to build the seating for which Fortress was, and is, still well known.
High-end office seating along with healthcare waiting room seating, remained the focus until 1998 when a local theater designer, Neal Parsons, approached Fortress with a challenge. Could we build a theater chair of his design but with the stringent build quality required in the commercial seating market? As sometimes happens, being in the right place at the right time is the key element. Fortress’ Off Broadway Home Theater Seating became the brand to go to when custom seating was required.
