DTS Play-Fi Grows Partnerships, Products & Features Roster
Dannie Lau, with the new Play-Fi-endowed SVS Prime Wireless speaker system
DTS Play-Fi, the high-resolution wireless multi-room audio streaming technology platform, has expanded its ecosystem and partnerships across more brands and products – including AirPlay 2 support on select products. Details of the platform’s continuing expansion were shared last week by Dannie Lau, general manager, Networked Audio Division, DTS, at a Partner Summit demo in New York City, where the McIntosh RS200 wireless speaker and the Arcam rPlay music streamer, the first two Play-Fi products with AirPlay 2, were displayed. The technology also now integrates Alexa Voice Service, Works with Alexa (currently in 40 products, according to Lau) and AlexaCast Service, enabling voice command control of devices via smartphones.
Lau provided an overview of where Play-Fi resides in the wireless technology landscape, reporting that 29 brand partners are currently fielding over 200 products on the market to date, in the form of all manner of lifestyle products, including sound bars and A/V receivers as well as tabletop, battery-powered and outdoor speakers. “We’re also moving these technologies into connected TVs,” he said, noting that various TV brands would make their own announcements next year about its inclusion in their hardware.
DTS Play-Fi offers very low-latency audio transmission capabilities and is also noteworthy for its ability to be compatible across brands. It is being featured in brands like SVS, for which DTS Play-Fi app control was introduced at the Seminar within the SVS Prime Wireless 2.1 speaker/subwoofer system. Lau said that the SVS brand is an apt example of a fitting vessel for DTS Play-Fi, remarking how strongly streaming capability as a feature resonates with SVS’s customers.
Several product categories and brands were used to show off various features of the platform, including:
- The wireless surround sound feature – via demos over Wi-Fi using MartinLogan soundbars, satellite speakers and a wireless sub;
- DTS Play-Fi for Connected TVs - showcasing lip-sync-accurate multi-room TV audio streaming, and streaming to wireless headphones via a headphone app for iOS and Android devices; as well as synchronized music playback across TVs and speakers;
- DTS Play-Fi IoT technologies – showcasing integration with HomePod (via Siri voice control) and, via DTS Play-Fi Cloud, with doorbells, cameras and lighting.
