Control4 Acquires Smart Home Remote Maker NEEO
As a home automation platform, Control4 has long been in the remote business—offering customers a way to replace all of that coffee table clutter with a single device that does it all. But there’s always room for improvement, right? That’s essentially what the company has said with their recently announced acquisition of NEEO, a Switzerland-based company that’s responsible for the wildly popular smart home remote of the same name.
With the acquisition, the plan is to integrate NEEO’s product and its team into the company, and will look to them in the development of the Control4's next-gen remote controls, touch panels, keypads, and other devices. Specifically, it was announced that NEEO founder Raphael Oberholzer will take a leadership role within the company, serving on the engineering team where he will report to Senior Vice President of Products and Services Charlie Kindel.
“Raphael built a world-class customer-centric product team with proven strengths in industrial design, product development, and user experience. We’re keen to add NEEO’s unique expertise and award-winning Swiss design ethic to enhance our plans for reimagining the way homeowners interact with their Control4 systems,” Martin Plaehn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Control4, said in a statement. “The NEEO acquisition is a talent and technology investment that will yield beautifully-designed and deeply integrated products in the future. We’re excited to welcome the NEEO team to the Control4 family.”

The statement also noted that NEEO will discontinue its direct-to-consumer model as part of the acquisition, though the company will continue to support existing NEEO customers. They also plan to provide NEEO remote owners with an upgrade path that they said will make it easy for them to experience their “broad array” of smart home solutions.
“From the start, it was obvious that both our companies are passionate for customer-centric design,” Oberholzer said in the statement. “By joining the Control4 team, we can execute our shared vision to accelerate the creation of beautiful products consumers want in their smart home.”
Control4 is at ISE 2019 in Amsterdam this week.
