Comcast Home Control Takes Router-Centric Approach
Comcast’s home security system Xfinity Home Control is considering upgrades that would allow professionally installed curated devices, such as cameras and doorbells, to be connected via Wi-Fi through residential routers or gateways.
Daniel Herscovici, senior vice president and general manager of Comcast’s Xfinity Home unit, stated that Comcast has seen a sharp increase in consumer interest in home control over the last six to 10 months and expects the market to double over the next 12 months.
Xfinity Home Control currently lets end users control their systems via their smartphones and add cameras for personalized home monitoring.
At a Parks Associates CONNECTIONS conference last week, Herscovici stated that he expected to see upgrades from “legacy systems” adding to the share of Xfinity Home Control sales.
Telecompetitor reported that Herscovici estimated that 75% to 80% of homes with home security systems today are still on legacy systems.
Herscovici noted that interest in upgrading home security systems is at least partially due to the emergence of new devices on the market that work with these systems. According to Telecompetitor, Herscovici stated that 40% of people are asking about video cameras and 26% are asking about connected doorbells.
He also noted that about 70% of U.S. households have broadband and a Wi-Fi router. As such, Comcast’s approach is to use a broadband-using home’s existing router or gateway as a platform for a range of home control devices.
In addition to a router, Herscovici stated that consumers also need someone to recommend to them what camera to use. For that, Comcast has developed a “curated devices” program. This entails the company testing a range of devices and settling on a few in each product category to support. Comcast will help its customers with the devices on the curated list.
Professional installation is needed with the Comcast home control. Herscovici stated that Comcast’s goal is to provide a single point of contact for all home control system matters.
