Detmer's Corner: Be a Winner, Hit Your Goals!
For over three decades my particular business passion was driving brands in the consumer electronics arena. Now, since launching Mike Detmer
Business Solutions, I’m fortunate to expand my horizons and be involved
with a broad array of companies from inside that industry and beyond.
While the companies I advise are fairly diverse from each other, one thing remains consistent for all of them ... with guidance, they always hit their goals.
That’s because setting and attaining goals is a predictable process that, once mastered, can be duplicated for virtually any enterprise—which is good news for technology integrators who want to expand their businesses and optimize their profits.
I’d like to tell you that the only way you can hit your goals is to hire a brilliant business consultant and business coach like me. But that wouldn’t be entirely true.
While it would certainly maximize your chances of success, there is another approach you can try before investing in a professional. Here’s a simple process you can follow on your way to the winner’s circle:
1) Set S.M.A.R.T goals—Peter Drucker, the father of modern management, coined this acronym as a way of helping companies and their employees stay on track.
The premise is simple: Make your
goals specific (S), make them Measurable (M), make them Attainable (A), make
them Relevant (R) to driving your business, and make them have a Timeline (T) for completion.
a. Here’s how: Make a list of the three most important things for your business to attain over the next six months. For each, state it as a goal and say how you will know if you hit it.
Be sure your stated goal is something you can achieve and say when you want to have it done—i.e., “Every field technician
is to attain CEDIA EST III certificate by June.” You now have a S.M.A.R.T. goal list to work from.
