Apple Unveils HomeKit Home Automation Effort
Apple, as part of its World Wide Developers Conference keynote on Monday, announced its rumored move into home automation app development. It's called HomeKit, and while the topic only took up a couple of minutes in the presentation, it promises to have great influence on the automation space.
The development kit, demonstrated by Craig Federighi, will launch a framework that allows developers to establish secure pairing of iOS devices with locks, lights, cameras, doors, thermostats and various other household products. Siri will be integrated with those apps.
Apple also flashed on the screen its partners for HomeKit: iDevices, iHome, Osram-Sylvania, Texas Instruments, Cree, Chamberlain, Marvell, Skybell, August, Honeywell, Haier, Schlage, Philips, Kwikset, Broadcom, Netatmo and Withings.
