15 Minutes With:: HydraConnect’s President, David Schanin
HydraConnect is a two-year-old company that offers sophisticated solutions to the integration of HDMI into Control4 home automation systems. The system combines U.S.-made hardware and proprietary software to automate what would otherwise be a very complex set-up process.
The HydraConnect product automatically interrogates HDMI components to determine optimal configuration settings, pre-authenticate HDCP, provide automatic EDID and key management, and configure CEC control for all system elements.
HydraConnect was founded in 2010 by David Schanin and Tony Anzelmo, two A/V professionals with over 60 years of combined integrated systems programming, electronics design, hardware development and manufacturing experience.
CustomRetailer: David, in a relatively short period of time, you have put forward a rather sophisticated package of hardware and software that seems to resolve many of the most vexing problems faced by systems integrators working in a Control4 environment. What brought you to this point?
David Schanin: The original inspiration was a Control4 installation in my own home which could not be configured to provide the experience I was looking for. One thing led to another, and I got together with a good friend of mine to design the missing link that would allow top quality video distribution, simple cost-effective audio distribution, and control of the TVs and other gear without those ugly IR blasters stuck on the front of them.
CR: HDMI, HDCP and EDID issues are notoriously hard to resolve. How is it that your systems can deal with these problems without difficulty?
Schanin: Our product integrates a sophisticated computer system internally which has thousands of lines of code that is able to perform a complete analysis of the system and thereby properly configure these problem settings. Additionally, this internal code communicates directly with the Control4 software so our system knows exactly what is expected of the system and optimizes its behavior to meet those requirements.
