After 14 Year Run, Oppo Will End Line of High-End Blu-ray Players
In a brief message simply titled 'Farewell', Oppo explains that they will begin "gradually" winding down production on their line of DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD disc players. This also includes their line of hi-fi headphones but is mostly unrelated to their smartphone arm.
"It has been 14 years since we established OPPO Digital in the United States, and with the support of our customers, technical partners, and movie/music studios, we produced many award-winning Hi-Fi audio products and universal disc players, spanning three generations from DVD, Blu-ray, to 4K UHD," the message states. "As our latest 4K UHD players reach the pinnacle of their performance, it is time to say goodbye."
Oppo notes in an FAQ that existing products will continue to be supported, warranties will still be valid, and both in-warranty and out-of-warranty repair services will continue to be available. They also note that "firmware will continue to be maintained and updates released from time to time," nothing newer products such as the UDP-203 and UDP-205 will likely receive more frequent upgrades while mature products such as the BDP-103 and earlier models will only get firmware upgrades if there are critical fixes.
Although hush about the situation, Oppo is certainly feeling the strain from streaming services and soundbars as consumers look to simplify their home theater situation. Similiar physical media verticals are seeing the same pain points, as seen in retails general abandonment of CDs and a blowback from the recent vinyl fad.
All that to say that there is still purpose and arguments for the continuation of DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD. And while it feels that general majority of movie enthusiasts can tolerate a 1080p stream, enabled by both lack of content and internet capabilities, there is still a niche of purists that will carry the torch. But being niche means some companies will fall to the way-side, and that's exactly what happened to Oppo.
It's a bittersweet end to such a beloved company who built their esteemed reputation in the beginning days of the 1080p era. Between their top-quality DACs, excellent customer service, and advanced upscaling techniques, Oppo had made a name that was synonymous with success.
More recently, Oppo has found success in their line of smartphones, shifting priorities and resources to that arm of their company. "From now on, OPPO Digital will focus our main effort on organizing and ensuring long-term support for the existing generation of products. As such, we will not have the resources to develop and release new generations of products."
If you take anything away from this, just remember how dedicated Oppo is till the end. Honoring warranties and offering firmware updates past their own lifecycle is an incredibly honorable thing to do considering they have no reputation left to tarnish.
